You’ll find parts of this post from last year’s conference and Flip video recorders are still one of my favorite new techie toys. They are so easy to use but they have a wide range of applicability and use that I’ve sent students from K4 to 12th grade use it well. Here are the basic directions for use a Flip camera from before:
Learning the Flip takes about 5 minutes –for some even less –your students will have the easiest time learning it and it seems made for their hands. This is the back of the Flip –I’ve labeled all of the parts:
This is the side with directions for turning the Flip on -
And this is the other side –you have a flip out USB connector and a video out (for TV or projector)
Now after a really brief introduction and practice with our Flips session attendees will be broken up into groups to complete a video scavenger hunt to practice using the Flip in subject based projects.
Here are the options:
Careers:Find five people in the building and ask them what their job is –ask a few questions about how they became interested in that type of work and what they had to do to be qualified for the job. Try to find a variety of different jobs types. Record the interviews (Ask permission first!!)
Community:Find five people in the building from the upstate and ask them what their favorite family type activity is in the upstate. What would they recommend to a new family to the area or a family on vacation. Record the interviews (Ask permission first!!)
Math:Find at least 5 different geometric shapes represented in the architechture or art withing the building. Have a team member point out the shape and describe it while another member records. Extra points for more unsual shapes!!
Science:Go outside and find at least five different elements that can be taped and explained to illustrate the weather conditions today. Be creative!!!
Vocabulary:Find objects or scenes in the building that represent the following vocabulary words. Have a team member record the object or scene and have a team member explain the choice. Take turns recording and explaining! You are also allowed to act out a scene if you can’t find anything appropriate in the time limit. The words are:Abandon ,Enigma,Novice and Joyful.
Social Studies/History:Find and choose one tile on the JL history walk on the front side walk that your team finds interesting. Interview at least five people (some can be team members) about their memories of the object or time and or their reaction/feelings about it. Ask permission before taping!
Teams have 20 minutes to complete the scavenger hunt and return to the media center to upload their videos and practice editing them. Finished scavenger hunt videos will be uploaded here –possibly just excerpts depending on how kindly the blog upload limit is feeling at the time. I had trouble uploading the larger podcasts from this morning’s session so we’ll have to see!
